UCGS Design & Technology Department
It is our aim to equip young people with the skills necessary to take a proactive role in society. Pupils build their knowledge and confidence by creating innovative solutions to identified problems, considering both functional and aesthetic needs. Students will have an appreciation of the social, economic and environmental impact technological developments have on the world so they can become responsible, informed designers and consumers.

Mr M Jones D&T Technician
This is a very active department with two teachers and a full time technician, teaching D&T up to GCSE and D&T Product Design ‘A’ Level.
The department has two new workshops, one of which also has a suite of computers for CAD, the other a range of CAM equipment, including a laser cutter, plotter cutter and 3D printer.
Each year the department runs a number of visits and extra-curricular activities to help motivate and support our students.
Visits have in the past included: The V&A Museum; LEGO Engineering Challenge; The New Designers Exhibition; Design in Action Lecture; Dyson/Brunel Workshop; BMW Mini Factory Tour; and The Big Bang STEM Fair; as well as having guest speakers come in to also talk to groups.
Extra-curricular clubs have included The Christmas Workshop; Meccano & Robotics Engineering as well as Creative LEGO building. Additional lunchtime support sessions are run for our Year 11 students, with our KS5 students having an open door policy to spend extra time on their projects, during their non-contact periods.
We have also very successfully entered our students into the CREST Award and the National Starpack Packaging Awards.
