Bhangra and Punjabi Folk Dance After-school class every Monday 15:20 – 16:20
Learn the traditional art form of Punjabi folk dance that has taken the world by storm.
Interested in both a stress-relieving physical activity and unique cultural experience? Or perhaps you're keen to get in touch with your Punjabi roots in a fun and interactive way? Bhangra is one of many folk dances originating from the Punjab region of Northern India and Eastern Pakistan. Although it's unknown exactly when/how it originated, these folk dances have been combined and performed as a competitive team-based sport in countries all over the world over the last few decades, starting in Punjab itself. Most universities in the UK now have Bhangra teams that take part in national, and even international, competitions with people participating of all races and ethnicities.
The course involves the fundamentals of traditional Bhangra including individual moves, the segments of a typical routine and physical stamina building! Bhangra performances are typically 7-8 minutes in length and are done in groups, so can be a perfect way to meet new people and learn team-working skills. Previously, I have competed and won a national Bhangra competition in the UK and have also represented my university in their Bhangra team.
What to expect:
No experience required so come along and enjoy the art of Bhangra, whether you’re a beginner or have danced for years!
