“The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.”
    ― Roald DahlMatilda

If you know anything about Roald Dahl’s Matilda, it sees a young girl realise her full potential through the world of books and the guidance of an inspirational, caring teacher.  The aim of the English department is to help student realise that potential in themselves, find their inner talents and develop confident skills in communication and analysis that will support them throughout their life.

We make full use of our multi-media facilities, and with interactive whiteboards, in-built sound systems and visualizers comes the ability to engage with English Language and Literature in a way that is unprecedented in previous years; as a department we intend to make the most of that.  Alongside the activities that you would expect to see in an English classroom, students participate in film, poetry and art projects; we run writing clubs, Creative Writing Enrichment, media Enrichment and Debate. The English teachers are a passionate team who frequently give their free time to support students to aspire and achieve. We really do mean to help all our students become, as Matilda puts it, amazing people who live exciting lives.
