Upton Court Grammar School staff and students celebrated the opening of the first phase of the school’s multi-million pound building project on Wednesday 3 May, with a ribbon cutting event.

The school moved into the latest block, constructed adjacent to the sixth form centre and restaurant erected in 2012, a three-storey building housing a number of subjects including technology, computing, mathematics and music, at the start of the summer term 2017. Meanwhile the original school building has been taken over by contractors for a complete refurbishment, due to be completed in January 2018.

A former student was invited as the guest speaker for the opening ceremony; Captain Alice West, who left the school in 2009 inspired year 7 and 8 pupils with her story about being a student at Upton Court Grammar School, reminiscing about how her teachers had encouraged her to fulfil her dreams of going to read Physics at University, then gaining commission as an Officer in the British Army.

The last phase of the building project, funded by the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme, will be completed towards the end of 2018 with the construction of a state of the art sports facility for the school.

Also attending the event were representatives of the site development company Bowmer and Kirkland and Old Paludians (school alumnus).

Upton Court Grammar School Principal Mercedes Hernandez Estrada said “We are delighted that we are able to offer our students and community improved facilities so that they continue to excel.”
