Talented students at Upton Court Grammar School combined artistic flair with scientific astuteness in designing a ‘Chemistry Superhero’. The competition, run by Head of Chemistry Mandip Thind, received a large number of entries by children in years 7-9 (11 – 14 year olds) and a range of prizes were awarded.
The overall winner was year 8 student, Nudrat Nawar (13) who created Chem Woman, a superhero with powers to conduct electrolysis, reduce acidity in rivers through lime dispensers, extract metals from ores and conduct analysis of the environment, amongst other amazing abilities. Nudrat was awarded a Minion USB for her creative design and use of humour to raise awareness of serious science and technology related issues.
Upton Court Grammar School Principal Mercedes Hernández Estrada said “Nudrat has brought chemistry alive and tried to address real problems through this fun competition. This is an example of learning, imagination and enjoyment coming together in one competition.”
