  • Valentine's Party for the Elderly

On Thursday 23rd February sixth form students from Upton Court Grammar School hosted a Valentine's Day party for residents of local care homes for the elderly.

Organised by the senior prefect team, a number of students spent weeks undertaking fundraising events such as selling Valentine's roses and washing teachers' cars in a bid to raise enough funds to host the afternoon party providing food, entertainment, spot prizes and decorations.

The afternoon event began by welcoming the senior citizens and their care workers, greeted by tea and biscuits. Then followed the entertainment including live playing of the Dhol, a dance performance by year 7 pupils, and music. A traditional English bingo game then followed, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the guests.

During the main meal, sixth form students socialised with the OAPs, swapping stories while comparing 21st century school life with education in the early 20th century.

Aside from making a real contribution to the local community, the students learned a great deal from this experience, including teamwork, leadership and communication.

Upton Court Grammar School Principal Mercedes Hernandez Estrada said "This annual event gives an opportunity for generations to meet and learn from each other whilst having a good time. It gives young people the opportunity to be responsible members of the community.”
